Lisa Harvey with her 5th place finish has once again qualified to represent Canada and the Spartans at the Americas Cross Country Championships (formerly the NACAC Cross Country Championships) March 6, 2010 in Trinidad & Tobago.
In order for the Canadians to qualify for the IAAF World Cross country Championships which are being held in Bydqoszcz, Poland the team must first finish in the top 2 among the competing NACAC countries at the Americas Championships.
Since the first NACAC Cross Country Championships began in 2006 the Canadian Senior Women’s Team have won it twice (2007 & 2008) and finished second twice (2006 & 2009).
If Lisa and the rest of the Canadian Senior Women’s team can continue this trend then this will be Lisa’s Unbelievable 11th World Cross Country Championships Team dating back to 1989. Lisa best results at World Cross Country as a Junior was 6th place and as a Senior 32nd place.
Congratulations Lisa Harvey on an amazing running career that has spanned now over 20 amazing years!!!

Lisa Harvey of Calgary Wins women's 10K
May 10, 2009
|
Mother's Day Run And Walk
The 32nd annual Mother's Day Run and Walk attracted about 14,000 participants in Calgary on Sunday.
By Kristen Odland, Calgary Herald
Lisa Harvey simply gets better with age. The 39-year-old Calgary mother of two showed she still has what it takes to win in the annual Sport Chek Mother's Day Run and Walk on Sunday, repeating her 2008 performance as the fastest woman in the 10-kilometre race
It was Harvey's seventh win since she began running in the fundraising event which supports the Calgary Health Trust neo-natal intensive-care unit and special-care nurseries.
I feel like I'm stronger every year, definitely, said Harvey, who clocked a time of 35 minutes and 59 seconds in the 32nd running of the event. I'm 39 now. Next year, I'm going to be a Master at this race which, in running, is 40 and over.
I'm just really happy to be running this well at 39. Gorgeous conditions. No rain, no snow -- it makes a huge difference, said Harvey, daughter Allison, 10, at her side after finishing her own five-km run. (My time) was pretty good for Calgary. Two weeks ago in Victoria, I was second at their big race (TC10K put on by the Times Colonist newspaper) and ran a 34:30.
It makes sense with the altitude here that I'd be a little slower.
Harvey's main goal this running season is to shave some more time off her marathon distance(42 km),which at her fastest was in two hours, 48 minutes in 2007. Lately, she's been running 10kmand half-marathons (21 km) as part of her training.
I need to get quicker because I want to be around 2:40,"said the longtime member of the Calgary Spartans Track Club. "This is what I need to do is 10Ks to get lots of mileage in and get faster.

She had several PR performances along the way including the score.
She PRed in Hurdles, Javelin, 800m, and 200m.
Her score of 3096 is impressive for her first Heptathlon.
Evelyn Anderson
You would never know that Evelyn Anderson is brand new to the sport of Track & Field if you looked at the times she has run this year! Evelyn capped off here amazing first year in the sport with a Silver Medal in the Girls 800m at the 2008 Alberta Summer Games which were held in Medicine Hat. It was unfortunate that Evelyn who is the reigning 2008 Midget Girls 1500m Alberta Provincial Champion & ranked #1 in the Province for Midget Girls and was favoured to win gold was unable to toe the line due to sickness. Evelyn however still sick mustered up the energy the next day for the 800m finals and went on to capture the silver medal missing gold by only less then 4 tenths of a second. As we move into the new season we will be looking forward to some great things from Evelyn!

Calgary's Corrigan speeds to worlds

Has qualified for IAAF cross-country finals

| Peter Corrigan, centre, is one of three
Calgarians heading to the IAAF cross-country running world
championships at the end of March in Edinburgh,
Scotland. |
Stuck in a pack with about 15 other runners, Peter Corrigan decided to
make his move.
Turning on the jets, he tore past the group and his main competition,
Kyle O'Neill of western Ontario, at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport
cross-country running championships.
At the finish line Corrigan gazed back, and the realization hit him.
His burst of speed at the end of the 10-kilometre championship race on
Nov. 10 in Victoria's Beacon Hill Park had not only given him CIS rookie
of the year, it also placed him on the all-Canadian squad.
"Crossing the line, I knew I was rookie of the year," says Corrigan,
who was raised in Calgary and finished 11th overall in November's race
while wearing the colours of Halifax's Dalhousie University Tigers. "I was
thinking, 'Wow, it was pretty much a flawless season. Every goal I wanted
to accomplish, I accomplished.' "
A few weeks later, on Dec. 1 at Guelph, Ont., Corrigan finished sixth
at the Canadian junior cross-country championships - and that result
qualified him for the upcoming 36th International Association of Athletics
Federation world cross-country championships on March 30 at Edinburgh,
Scotland.
Fellow Calgarian distance runners Nyial Majock and Lisa Harvey will
join him.
Steve Adams has been Corrigan's coach for two and a half years but he's
hesitant to make any bold predictions regarding the outcome of worlds in
Edinburgh.
"I'm hoping for a top 50, top 40 . . . that would be great," says
Adams. "But you never know what can happen.
"This is an intense competition."
Headlining the world championships will be runners from distance
powerhouse Ethiopia, including five-time IAAF cross-country champion
Kenenisa Bekele.
At first Corrigan, 19, who lives in Halifax, wasn't sure what goals to
set in the face of such stiff competition. Despite his success on Canadian
soil, surely he wouldn't be able to win, would he?
"Top North American would be really nice, or top Canadian, even," says
Corrigan, who ran in Calgary for Bowness High School and the Calgary
Spartans track club. "That's how I am looking at it. I'm not looking at
being in the top 50 or top 60."
However, Corrigan does have youth and dedication on his side. Adams
said Corrigan has poured himself into his training, staying healthy and
progressively getting better along the way.
"When he wants to go after something, he really puts his mind to it. He
does everything in his lifestyle that he has to do in order to obtain that
goal," says Adams.
This is just the first step, according to Adams. He thinks we'll see
Corrigan wearing the Maple Leaf for Canada at the Olympics one day.
"I think he's going to be somebody we're going to see competing at a
world level in the future," says Adams.
After worlds in Edinburgh, the pair plan on traveling to the IAAF world
junior championships from July 8 to 13 in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
Corrigan says he is a career runner and doesn't foresee a time in the
near future when he'll hang up the shoes.
"I'm never going to stop running," he says.
"I definitely want to be running competitively as long as I
can."

JD Group
Well this weekend provincials proved to be a great one. The JD Group came home a little bit heavier. This year's Combined Events Provincials proved to be a very succesful one not only at an individual level, but also as a group.
Out of the possible 21 medals available in the events entered, the Spartans JD Group walked away with 9 medals (5 gold, 3 silver, and 1 bronze).
Kenny, Saeed and Tyson were double medalist this past weekend. Kenny had a 2 gold medal performance, while Saeed and Tyson came through each with a gold and silver medal performance. Other individual medalist were Emma (gold), Abdul (silver), and Jordan (bronze).
What was even more impressive was the 26 PBs the group achieved. Some notable PBs were:
Abdul with at 1.79m PB in Shot Put
Emma with a 0.12s PB in the 60m
Jordan and Kenny both broke the 9 second barrier in the 60m, with Kenny running a 8.94s and Jordan an 8.85s
Both Jordan and Saeed shaved off double digits in their 800m times. Jordan shaved of 13 secs (2:33.45) and Saeed shave off 19 secs (2:47.81)
Julianna managed a 55 cm PB in Long Jump
Tyson out threw his old PB in shot put by 57 cm
Special thanks goes out to the parent this weekend for all their help in coaching, making sure the kids were at the events, warming up, and cooling down.

Junior Men
Peter Corrigan, who was this years CIS Rookie of the year for Cross Country had the race of his life at the AGSI Junior Men's Canadian National Cross Country Championships. For the first 3km Peter took a commanding lead on a very cold, tough and snow covered course. In the end Peter would give up that lead to place 6th place but at the same time earn himself a guaranteed spot on the very powerful Canadian Junior Men's Team. Peter Corrigan will be part of the 2008 XC team who will first compete at the NACAC Cross Country Championships in Early March and then head off to represent Canada & the Spartans in Edinburg, Scotland at the World Cross Country Championships on March 30, 2008! Congratulations Peter, all of your hard work and determination has finally paid off! This is just step one to a very promising and hopefully long career at the World Class level of Distance Running.
Spencer Pootz also ran a great race at the AGSI Junior Men's Canadian National Cross Country Championships. Spencer Pootz ran a great race on the very cold and tough snow packed course placing only 1min and 3 seconds out of the top 10 placing him 42nd out of a very tough field of 201 Junior Men, the largest field of competitors at this years Canadian Cross Country Championships!
Senior Women
Lisa Harvey, took the course as the weather began to drop to very uncomfortable conditions and ran on a very beaten up snow covered course against some of the countries top female distance runners. Lisa who has been a member of many Canadian Cross Country Teams since she was a Junior Athlete placed 11th and earned her spot in the Selection Pool which considers the top 12 places at the trials for Team Selection. As only 6 members will represent each team her placement on the Canadian National Team heading to Worlds is yet to be determined.
Videos and Interviews from This years Canadian Cross Country Championships can be viewed at the FloTrack Website.

Amanda McLeod and Ken Myers win HSBC Marathon
(Calgary Sun Article)
Even though Ken Myers was competing in his second marathon in just over a month, the 27-year-old Calgary Spartans runner still had a little jump left for the finish.
I tried to sprint the last 100 metres, he said with a sheepish grin after winning his second HSBC Calgary Marathon at Millennium Park yesterday.
With all the people there, I just got excited.
Myers, who also won in 2004, finished the event in 2:33:45, 43 seconds slower than the time he posted at the ING Ottawa Marathon at the end of May, where he was 21st overall.
I felt pretty comfortable the whole way, but the last five kilometres it starts to get a little tight.
Myers added he wasn't expecting to win, especially with such a quick turnaround between the races.
You never know in a marathon what's going to happen.
A PhD student in biomechanical engineering at the University of Calgary, Myers pocketed $1,000 for yesterday's effort, but that will likely go toward his wardrobe.
I'll probably get some new clothes, he said, noting he's set to enter medical school at the U of C in August.
Fellow Spartan Amanda McLeod topped the women's field, finishing in a time of 2:58:46 -- a personal best for the 29-year-old -- earning her a $1,000 cheque, which will likely go toward paying off student loans.
I wanted to break three (hours), she said.
The last one I did was 3:06.
A member of the cross-country running team for four years while studying graphic art and design at SAIT/ACAD, McLeod made the switch to marathons after graduating three years ago.
It's a bit a of a leap, she admitted.
I just wanted to take it to the next level and see how far I could go.

Great Spartans results
The rain and the wind didn't stop the Calgary Spartans JD Group with
coming away with some medals and more importantly, achieving many personal
bests.
One of the big winners from the team was Rona Herzog. In only her second
time competing in the Speed and Stamina Triathlons, she not only came away a
double gold medal winner, but shattered many of her PBs. She set new PBs in
overall points in the Speed and Stamina, she beat her old 100m PB by 0.4
seconds, her Shot Put by almost 50cm, her Long Jump by almost 30cm, and her
800m time by 9 seconds. Well done Rona!
Another double gold winner was Nicole Ronsky. She won the Bantam 100m and
200m in less than ideal sprinting conditions. Nicole ran the 100m like if
she was a seasoned pro. She won the prelims with a fast time of 14.17s (a
new PB by 0.2 seconds). But she wasn't done there. She followed that
performance in the finals by being the only girl to run under 14 seconds in
the race, 13.77s, shaving off an unheard of 0.4 seconds off her PB that she
set a couple hour earlier. But Nicole saved her best performance for last.
She won her 200m in a time of 28.69s, beating her old PB by 2 seconds. Well
done Nicole!
And finally rounding out the top three performances for the weekend was
Kenny Shokoya. She finished a tight second in the Speed Triathlon behind
Rona, but set some unbelievable PBs. She beat her old point total PB by 121
pts, ran her 100m 1.15 seconds faster, threw 70cm farther in Shot Put, and
jumped 40cm farther in Long Jump. Well done Kenny!
Other athletes that bested their previous PBs (New PB vs Old PB):
Alex Burk
Speed Triathlon (323 pts vs 286 pts)
Stamina Triathlon (352 pts vs 303 pts)
Long Jump (2.50m vs 2.40m)
800m (3:17.85 vs 3:26.94)
Saeed Shokoya
Speed Triathlon (693 pts vs 436 pts)
100m (14.27s vs 14.95s)
Taiwo Shokoya
100m (16.78s vs 18.19s)
Krystine Samson
100m (16.60s vs 16.99s)
Simon-Daniel Jolicoeur

Long Jump (3.10m vs 2.89m)
Aisha Shokoya
100m (13.85s vs 12.73s)
Again a big thank you goes out to the parents for "wading" in the make shift
pool, we call Foothills Track.
The Middle & Long Distance Group had some awesome performances regardless of the weather. Notable standouts this weekend were:
Ciara Kary: Gold in both the Midget Girls 800m & 1500m
Danielle Kendall: Gold in the WCSG Trials 400m and Bronze in the 200m
Peter Corrigan: Gold in the WCSG Trials 1500m

Provincial Hershey Meet
June 9, 2007
|
The Calgary Spartans Junior Development sent up a strong contingent to the
2007 Hershey Provincials held this year in Edmonton at Foote Field. With a
strong showing at the qualifying meet in Calgary, there was high hopes to
carry on the success in Edmonton. Athletes that qualified for the
provincials were Alex Burk, Nicole, Ronsky, Saeed Shokoya, Kenny Shokoya,
Aisha Shokoya, Taiwo Shokoya, Jenna McIntyre, Rona Herzog, Pascal Herzog,
Simon Jolicoeur, Cody Wenkoff. Krystine Samson and Mallory Kroeker did
qualify but could not make the trip to Edmonton.
With a beautiful day to compete under, many of the Spartans were able to
come back to Calgary with an assortment of colourful ribbons for finishing
in the top 8.
Alex Burke - 8th in the 9-10 year old girls 200m
Nicole Ronsky - 6th in the 13-14 year old girls 200m
Saeed Shokoya - 1st in the 10-11 year old boys 100m and 2nd in the 200m
Kenny Shokoya - 1st in the 9-10 year old girls 100m and 1st in the 200m
Aisha Shokoya - 5th in the 13-14 year old girls 100m and 3rd in the 200m
Taiwo Shokoya - 4th in the 9-10 year old boys 50m
Jenna McIntyre - 7th in the 11-12 year old girls 800m
Simon Jolicoeur - 5th in the 13-14 year old boys Ball Throw
Cody Wenkoff - 4th in the 13-14 year old boys 800m and 4th in the 1600m
Honourable mentions go out to Aisha Shokoya who just missed out in the top 8
with a 9th place finish in the Standing Long jump, Nicole Ronsky who just
missed out making the 100m finals with a 9th place finish missing the finals
by a tenth of a second, and Cody Wenkoff who missed the top 8 in Ball Throw
is a 9th place finish. We would also like to note that even through Rona
and Pascal Herzog did not finish in the top 8 in their respective events,
they had some personal best in their events. Both shattered their personal
best in Ball Throw (Rona and Pascal) and Standing Long Jump (Pascal).
Another huge shout goes out to the parents of the athletes. On behalf of
Trish, myself and the athletes we like to thank the parents for their
spirited support and the chauffeuring skills.
It was great to see that everyone had success at the Hershey's Provincials
but most importantly everyone had fun.

2007 Indoor Alberta Provincial - JD Group Results
March 4, 2007
|
JD Group competes at Provincials (March 3-4)
Three junior development athletes competed in Edmonton this past weekend,
Alexandra Burk ('97), Sarah deLange ('93) and Grace Kyle ('93). All were
competing in their first ever track meet. With only 5 weeks of training
under the belt, they all managed to produce some fantastic individual
results.
A first year Pee Wee, Alexandra Burk competed in the Speed Triathlon (60m,
Long Jump, Shot Put) on Saturday and the Stamina Triathlon (Long Jump, Shot
Put, 800m) on the Sunday. In the speed triathlon, Alex managed to produce
some impressive results in all three events to finish 15th overall in
amongst Pee Wee with 257 points, and 3rd overall amongst 1997 Pee Wee in
Alberta. Not bad for her first time competing. After overcoming her initial
nerves, she did even better the next day. She jumped farther in long jump
by 38 cm and threw an outstanding 1.23 m farther than her Saturday total.
As a result of her best performance of the weekend, she finished tied for
8th in the Pee Wee class with 338 points, and 2nd overall amongst the '97
Pee Wee in Alberta.
Sarah deLange was very impressive in her first meet. She battled through
her strep throat to run a very respectable 10.63s in the 60m, 35.21s in the
200m and jump 3.02m in long jump. She did all this with limited training
and in running shoes!
Grace Kyle continued the success of the JD athletes. She competed in three
events and posted some great results as well. Grace ran an impressive
6:16.46 in the 1500m and ran a 33.76s in the 200m. She also jumped 2.84m in
long jump. This again was impressive considering that she too had limited
training and was competing in running shoes.

Check out the final on video
In the Boys 800m preliminary rounds which went on Feb 16,2007 Friday night there was a total of 112 competitors competing for the top 27 times which would advance to one of the 3 finals on Saturday. We had two competitors in this event and it started out with a blast. With both Evan Kimick and Peter Corrigan controlling and winning their heats from the start to finish. Evan Kimick won his heat with a personal best time of 1:59.29 then next it was Peter Corrigan winning his heat with a time of 1:59.25. This had Peter and Evan seated 4th and 5th respectively going into a finals that was the talk of the meet and would produce one of the fastest indoor High School Boys 800m times ever! With all the top 9 finishers having a time of 2:00 or faster it was considered one of Simplot Games most exciting finals to come. On Saturday with both Evan and Peter toeing the line representing the Calgary Spartans we were set for an outstanding race. Also toeing the line were two of the USA's most sought after College Prospects (Californian Cory Primm and Wyoming's Eric Strand whom were favoured to finish in the top two positions according to local papers). America's Cory Primm who took it out in the first 400m with a blazing split of 53.4. with the rest of the field splitting in 55 seconds would start things off. The race was on and with less then 100m to go Peter Corrigan who was sitting in 4th place made his move and was closing fast on Cory Primm but unfortunately ran out of room but he would still go on to finish in 2nd place with a personal best time of 1:54.98. Evan Kimick also ran a personal best time of 1:59.34 which placed him 10th overall. It's also important to note that Cory Primm whom was the winner ran his PB indoors with a final time of 1:51.89 which ranks him # 2 in California history indoors and #10 all-time in the U.S. amongst High School Boys.
