Coach Requirements

For coaches who work with athletes ages 9 to 13, Run/Jump/Throw certification is a requirement, Sport Coach trained/certified is recommended.

For coaches who work with athletes ages 13 and up, Club coach certification is a requirement. You must pursue certification based on your area of focus  (Club Coach – Sprints/Hurdles, Club Coach – Distance, Club Coach – Jumps, Club Coach – Throws)

 

Athletics Alberta Membership: Coaches must maintain an annual membership with Athletics Alberta. This is purchased through AthleticsREG. Please submit receipt for your purchase using the online expense form below. If you purchased it with a coach credit card, Admin will need your receipt. If you paid personally, you are eligible for reimbursement of this expense.

Criminal Record Check: Coaches must maintain a current criminal record check. These are done online through AthleticsREG. Please submit receipt for your purchase using the online expense form below. If you purchased it with a coach credit card, Admin will need your receipt. If you paid personally, you are eligible for reimbursement of this expense. These expire every 2 years. You will receive a notification from AthleticsREG when you need to renew.

Coach Locker: Coaches must take ongoing professional development through the coach.ca locker. This is your shortcut for your Safe Sport Course and your MED course.

Safe Sport Course (Required): This course is required by Athletics Alberta and is available through the Locker. It must be renewed every 4 years. Access it here: coach.ca locker.

Respect in Sport Course (Required): This course only needs to be taken once and is required by the Calgary Spartans. Access it here. Please let the president know when you have completed this course. We are not automatically notified.

Making Ethical Decisions (MED, Required): This course only needs to be taken once. You can access this through you Locker or through the following links: Course / Evaluation

First Aid with CPR (Required in most circumstances): There are many acceptable first aid certification courses, and the Spartans will accept any Canadian certification. One course we suggest is through St. John’s Ambulance, accessible here.

Forms

Incident report form: Report any injuries, safety violations, or misconduct immediately after they occur. Documenting the incident while details are fresh is crucial for ensuring prompt and appropriate follow-up. You can find a copy of the report form here.

Expense reimbursement form: Submit your expenses online for reimbursement. You can submit meet expenses paid personally, coach per-diem dates, coach travel dates, as well as receipts for expenses charged to your club credit card. You can find a copy of the expense reimbursement form here.

Athlete assistance form: The Spartans are committed to ensuring every child is included. We depend on our coaches to identify situations where financial support may be necessary. Please submit assistance requests to president@calgaryspartans.com. Requests will be kept confidential.
